The study of Latin as a subject in the degree programme Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools is oriented towards the requirements of the practice of teaching Latin at grammar schools. University education in Latin is the basic science for European self-understanding; the subject matter is texts from Roman-Latin antiquity and late antiquity as well as from the Latinity of the Middle Ages and modern times, which have shaped European intellectual history in a special way. Students are to be qualified on the basis of the acquired knowledge and competences for academic work and socially responsible practice of the teaching profession. Research focuses The main study objectives in Latin include: Acquisition or improvement of language competence (confident knowledge of the language, theoretical and historical aspects of the Latin language), methodical handling of literature (basic concepts of literary studies, history of Latin literature and its reception, text transmission and criticism, scientific interpretation) and the necessary knowledge of ancient history or cultural studies (philosophy, political history, religion, art, law, society, etc.) as well as the ability to didactically convey subject content.
