The Master's degree in Media Culture belongs to the field of media research in Cultural Studies and provides graduates with theoretical, historical and methodological skills in the critical analysis of analogue and digital media cultures. The research-oriented Cultural Studies degree course assumes a reciprocal relationship between culture and media, according to which each culture shapes its media formations and, conversely, all cultural processes are fundamentally formatted by media. In this perspective, the media are not understood as neutral channels of transmission, but rather as active mediators of human relationships to the world, which shape sensory perception, serve to generate, store and process knowledge, and shape social relationships and political public spheres. Media are thus taken into account in their specific logic, that is, in terms of their materiality, operationality and ecology. Based on this broad concept of media, the course imparts theoretical, historiographical and methodological knowledge and trains the students in reflecting on current specialist discourses as well as in socially-wide debates at the connecting points between art, society, science and technology. Embedded in the interdisciplinary structure of the Institute for Film, Theatre, Media and Cultural Studies (FTMK) at the JGU, the degree program also opens up access to interdisciplinary media and cultural theory content and problems. Project modules also enable the conception and implementation of larger thematic formats on current research topics in the interlinking of theory and practice. The four-semester Master's program qualifies students for activities in a wide variety of demanding professional fields with media and / or cultural relevance, such as in film, television and radio editorial offices, in the field of digital media, in museums and archives, in media and cultural policy institutions.
