Target group
No other industrialised country has as few school psychologists as Germany. But they are urgently needed. Berliner Zeitung (28.03.2012) School psychology is an important field and application in psychology. The focus is on support for all those involved in school life: Pupils and their relatives, teachers, school leaders, school supervisors, school administration and legislative bodies. The task spectrum of school psychologists is very broad: • They support and advise, among other things, in connection with learning and performance problems (concentration, motivation, performance diagnostics, examinations), behavioural problems (school absenteeism, disruptive behaviour), conflicts and their constructive management (dealing with bullying, conflict moderation). • They provide training and further education for guidance counsellors, teachers, school leaders and pupils (conversations, conflict management, social learning, health) and support in the management and prevention of school crisis situations. • For teachers and school leaders, they offer supervision and coaching in individual and group settings, thereby contributing to the further development of their professionalism. • In the case of questions concerning school development, they support teaching staff with their methodological competence. • They explore how school works best and collaborate on improving the school system. In addition to broad knowledge and skills in the psychological fundamentals, school psychologists should have specialised knowledge, especially in pedagogical psychology (teaching and learning), psychodiagnostics, psychological interventions (counselling, training, coaching), crisis intervention and conflict management, evaluation methods and quality assurance as well as clinical child and youth psychology. In addition, they should have a sound understanding of the school system and empirical education research. These contents are taught in the Master’s degree course ‘School Psychology’. It is the first, and so far the only, Master’s programme in school psychology for psychologists in Germany.
