Islamic Theology

Target group

When choosing the course Islamic Theology in a European Context, students can expect an exciting and multifaceted Master’s course at a lively, open and young theological centre. They will have an opportunity to advance their professional knowledge, to develop sound academic working methods, to participate in the discourse on Islam in Europe, and to choose their own key areas in this exciting field of research. The course is interdisciplinary and provides comprehensive knowledge of historical and contemporary Islamic-theological topics, discussed both among Islamic scholars in Europe, as well as among Islamic, Christian and Jewish scholars and theologians. The Master’s programme provides a level of qualification for Islamic experts that is equivalent to the level of education of other (Christian and Jewish) theologies, allowing for an interreligious dialogue among equals. Students will also learn to analyse Islamic theology in its historical and contemporary significance in the societies of Europe, to evaluate it critically and rationally and to develop it further. Contents of the course are the history and present of Islam in Europe, Islamic law in the European context, Islam and religious pluralism, Specialist English of Islamic theology, as well as Hadith and Koran studies in Europe. In addition, interreligious dialogue in theory and practice as well as a one-semester stay abroad are part of the main focus. The aim is to understand Islamic-theological topics in everyday social life and actively shape Islamic discourse in Germany and Europe.
