Intercultural aspects and internationality in teaching

The curricular assimilation of internationalisation elements

Approach and adaptation with regard to COVID-19

The University of Bamberg’s Lehramt.International model project ‘Bamberg Teacher Education for a Global World’ (BaTEG) was initially focused on increasing the international mobility of student teachers. Albeit the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rethink and resulted in the development of a comprehensive programme relating to Internationalisation at Home, which remained a key component even after the resumption of stays abroad.

The curricular assimilation of these internationalisation experiences presented a challenge given the fixed structure of teacher training in Bavaria. This could only be overcome by means of intensive cooperation with the faculties. Three practical examples proved to be successful strategies and these are presented below.

Summer and winter schools

The international BaTEG summer schools have been taking place since 2022 in cooperation with various faculties. The summer school in 2022 ‘Between cultures, conflicts, and communication’ was organised by the Institute of Educational Science and BaTEG staff and was offered as a teaching methodology seminar. Some student teachers acted as co-organisers and were awarded ECTS credits.

Students value international networking

This approach with the Institute of Educational Science was continued in the following year under the topic ‘(Trans)cultural learning in teacher education’. Students appreciated this concept, since it offers international experience, contact with international students, relevant expertise and involvement in conference organisation.

Intercultural training

Since 2023, BaTEG has also been cooperating with the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań to offer a winter school in which Bamberg students can join with Poznań students to acquire theoretical and practical intercultural skills at both locations. The event is recognised by the Human Science and Education faculty as a seminar for three different modules.

I’m proud that I was able to pick up so much inspiration and so many points for reflection from the seminar on intercultural aspects. I’m bound to still have some gaps in my knowledge concerning Poland and am still uncertain how best to come across as an interculturally competent person. But what I do know for certain: I’m grateful that in the context of the seminar 'BaTEG Winter School 2023: Bamberg and Poznań' I was able to gain my own intercultural experiences and acquire the tools that I’ll need for my work as a future teacher.

Guest lectures and guest lecturers

To reach students who do not have a primary interest in internationalisation issues, BaTEG has once or twice a year been advertising financial support options for international guest lectures at teaching-related events for which lecturers can apply. There were 40 international guest lectures in a vast array of disciplines that have been funded since the start of the pandemic. This concept reaches a large number of student teachers and even provides them with experience of internationalisation that they might not otherwise actively pursue. It also strengthens collaboration with international academics, scientists and researchers, and our relationships with the partner universities.

Despite limited curricular flexibility, the strategies described above have in recent years enabled us to reach a large number of students and engage their enthusiasm for international and intercultural experiences.
