Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching

The department offers students a lot of freedom to compile their own course content for profile building in a modern modular system. To start with there are learning tasks that reflect different forms of digitisation. Students are then involved in real research and practical tasks in seminars. Students can work on current teaching research projects in Industry 4.0 (e.g. augmented reality), examine the digitisation of entire industries (e.g. banks, insurance companies) and empirically research the causes and consequences of social media.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Each year, we are able to offer a total of six Bachelor’s students in Business Information Systems the opportunity to complete a fully funded stay abroad at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. The resulting costs are borne by a full ISAP scholarship from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) (flight, tuition fees, monthly flat rate for accommodation, etc.). In addition, 71 other universities abroad are available for an exchange.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Stellenbosch University, South Afrika; Duke University, USA; Tel Aviv University, Israel; NOVA University Lisbon, Portugal; University Babes-Bolyai, Cluj-Napoca, Rumänien; University of Bergen, Norwegen; Université de Rennes 1, Frankreich; Universiteit Gent, Belgien.

Special features regarding the equipment

Several computer clusters are available; Research and Application Centre 4.0; SPSS licences, Stata licences, SmartPLS licences, etc. can be acquired for Master's theses; Access to additional software at IT workstations at the university: MS Office 2016, LibreOffice, Scribus, LaTeX tools, Adobe Acrobat Prof., GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Dreamweaver; Electronic exam and test systems; Business simulation software licences.

Special features regarding research activities

The department researches digitisation in ongoing projects from three perspectives: It combines the process and system view (e.g. use of digital technologies in the Internet of Things, in the smart factory), the value creation perspective (e.g. effects of digital technologies on entire industries such as banks, insurance companies and digital health) as well as the social / human perspective ( e.g. implications of social media on people and society). In addition, digitisation projects in politics, society and administration are ongoing.

Support for founders

Mentoring by professors; Courses on business start-ups and business plan competitions are integrated into the curriculum; Close cooperation with "Potsdam Transfer": Start-up service, start-up grants, provision of co-working spaces; "Potsdam International Transfer Collaboration Hub" (PITCH), "Potsdam Entrepreneurship Experience Lab"(PEELx); Leading position of the University of Potsdam in relevant start-up rankings; New: Potsdam Start-up Accelerator and WIncubator for students

Other special features

Projects at the interface between practice and research as well as opportunities for participation (e.g. in teaching, practice and research) inside and outside the curriculum (e.g. at the Weizenbaum Institute of Networked Society in Berlin); Design and implementation of social media campaigns).
