Special features regarding teaching

In the Bachelor’s programme, in addition to the essential basic knowledge, we also teach our students the associated methods and problem-solving skills. The Bachelor’s programme is continuously enriched by project work based on the lecture content. This project-based learning provides insight into the future world of work and training in our students’ team skills and goal orientation. We help our students in carry out stays abroad.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Master´s degree programme in ‘Electrical and Information Engineering’ offers int. students the best prerequisites for spending an ERAMUS semester or a full degree course at the University of Kiel. English-language instruction and international fellow students ideally motivate German-speaking students to spend time abroad as well. The institute participates in an int. summer school in Pisa in which students participate regularly and free of charge. The institute is also a co-provider of the Erasmus Mundus degree programme in ‘Electric Vehicle Propulsion and Control’.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department is also home to the Kiel Nanolaboratory where professors from the department conduct research. There have been a number of new appointments in recent semesters and as part of this a large proportion of the institute's equipment has been replaced. A new research building for the Center for Networked Sensor Systems and a new lecture hall building including library areas are currently being built on the Faculty’s Ostufer campus. Students have access to important online resources (subject-specific journals and E-Books) and to a specialist library. They are provided with virtual storage space of their own.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is involved in the research fields of renewable energies, electrical energy networks and artificial intelligence (AI), which are particularly important for a livable future. The Collaborative Research Centres on ‘Magnetoelectric Sensors’ and ‘Neuroelectronics’ are the cornerstones of our interdisciplinary research. The institute is involved in the research focus areas ‘Kiel Marine Science’, ‘Kiel Life Science’ and ‘Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science’ as well as the Cluster of Excellence ‘Future Ocean’ at the University of Kiel.

Support for founders

People interested in founding a company are given support and advice by the Center for Entrepreneurship of the University of Kiel. Spin-offs have already taken place at the Faculty of Technology. The university chairs actively support spin-offs.

Other special features

Before the start of the semester, the institute and the departmental student body offer first-year students an extensive programme including workshops and round tables. In addition to information on the degree programme and organisation, the focus is on finding sustainable learning groups, dealing with setbacks and reflecting on the decision to pursue a university-level degree. The introductory project for students then offers the option to work independently in a group. We regularly organise practical laboratory events for school pupils and students focussing on independent work.
