Special features regarding teaching

Small department with a very good support ratio; Learning centre with full-time academic collaborators; Flexible degree course (Studium Flexibel) is a programme to provide support in the difficult initial phase of studies by extending course contents from 2 to 4 semesters with additional events and coaching. Very good links with other departments, higher education institutions and regional industry; In addition to the core competence in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, subject specialisations in Automation Engineering, Lighting Engineering, Energy Engineering, Medical Technology, Technical Computer Science; Research focuses in various areas.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Partnerships with Scottish partner universities (Edinburgh Napier University; Abertay University, Dundee), but also with Ireland. Polish partner university Rzeszów University of Technology, initiation of cooperation with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, location northwest of Mexico City. German courses for Erasmus students, German courses for refugees. Free course auditing for refugees, mentorships for refugees. Modules optionally offered in English.

Special features regarding the equipment

Financial and technically very well-equipped laboratories and computer pool rooms; Bright workstations with modern equipment; Industry-tested hardware and software tools; Matlab/Simulink licence for every student; Manufacturer databases; university's own workshop to create prototypes and models for project work and final theses. Research focuses: Optics and optical applications in medicine: Laser structuring of implants, laser technology in diagnostics, optical imaging in medicine (endoscopy), dyes for the production of reactive oxygen; Medical Technology: GETEON – Zentrum für Gesundheitstechnologie und Ökonomie (Centre for Health Technology and Economics); New lighting technologies and systems; New energy technologies and rational energy applications: Competence platform on Centre for Strategic Corrosion Protection; Intelligent lights; Applied optics; LED Technology; Luminescent fluorescent materials; Degradation analyses, etc.

Other special features

Flexible Degree Course (Studium Flexibel: Programme in the initial study phase: The content of the first 2 semesters is extended over 4 semesters in order to optimise the learning environment, improve exam results and reduce the drop-out rate. Students attend half of the regular lectures and tutorials, receive support in Mathematics and Physics and are accompanied by a student coach. Learning centre open every day for 7 hours (even on Saturday) + online learning centre with academic collaborators on staff to support joint and individual learning, dealing with information gaps and so on.
