Special features regarding teaching

A familial atmosphere, with lecturers who are highly approachable to their students are hallmarks of the Department of Civil Engineering. The new seminar and laboratory buildings offer excellent facilities. Students can use the laboratories, complete practice-based theses and offer support in the field of research. The shared study model means a high level of practical relevance, with interdisciplinary projects and successful student competitions. A wide range of excursions and international workshops, as well as numerous events and lecture series, enhance the range of courses offered.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department maintains close contact with our partner universities worldwide. Teachers and students visit these on excursions and promote professional exchange (including research semesters). A mobility window in the curriculum simplifies the recognition of work done abroad. International workshops are held at regular intervals. Some modules are offered in English, and we host international guest lecturers. The THM Language Centre offers a wide range of foreign languages, and the International Office supports incoming and outgoing students.

Special features regarding the equipment

195 student workstations, 120 networked computer workstations with DIN A0 plotters and laser printers; A 5D lab with VR camera; New exhibition and presentation areas; Wide range of media offered by the library, including the current rules and standards as well as journals and specialist literature; Bookable, technically equipped group work rooms and numerous reading spaces; Superbly equipped new workshop for model building; New seminar and laboratory building; Auditorium for events of up to 190 people.

Special features regarding research and development

Our professors guide research projects in all areas of civil engineering. The focus, among other things, is on composite and steel structures for wind turbines and transport facilities, environmental issues in water management and urban water management, innovations in the digital transformation, and road safety. In some cases, our competence centres and institutes are integrated into this process. 12 PhD students are currently being supervised In addition to the courses offered by THM, regular doctoral colloquia are also offered in the department.

Support for founders

We actively support business start-ups and offer them our expertise. Students can use the laboratories and participate in practical patent developments (e.g. CLIXS®, distributed by betomax.com). TransMIT GmbH assists by providing its expertise as an interface between science and the business community. Innovative start-up ideas are encouraged at StartMiUp. Three start-ups have been created recently by the department: VARIOKAN (infrastructure), FISEGO (fire prevention) and Modular One (digitalisation).

Other special features

Professors in the Building and Construction Department (architecture and civil engineering) coordinate with one another at conferences and in monthly meetings, optimise organisational matters and suggest current topics for further development of the curriculum. Our students benefit from the common study model in their education, in mutual understanding and for interdisciplinary student projects. Our departmental student body is involved in social and cultural activities. The harmonious interaction between the two disciplines is unique in Germany.
