Special features regarding teaching

The Department of Architecture follows a research-oriented approach to teaching in cooperation with public organisations and companies in Munich. The TUM has an exceptionally broad subject portfolio. The courses are known for their technical orientation, their focus on constructive design and practice-oriented topics. The students use the Architekturmuseum München (Munich Architecture Museum) – the most attractive and largest teaching and research museum in the German-speaking world.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Department of Architecture is incorporated into one of the best universities in Europe. This includes strong alliances with companies and with academic institutions all over the world. Systematic internationalisation is one of the strategic development goals of Munich's school of architecture. The integration of a one-year stay abroad in the curriculum is designed to help students acquire international experience and expertise.

Special features regarding the equipment

Student designs, Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, dissertations and research work can be processed and realised in a qualified manner in the workshops, research laboratories and computer rooms of the Design Factory. Skilled trades: Woodworking workshop, plastic workshop, metal workshop, student workshop, spraying and painting room, plaster workshop; Digital Factory: Laser cutter, digital cutter, CNC milling machinery, foil cutter, 3D printing, photo studio; Data processing: Computer workstations, plotters; Multimedia devices available on loan

Special features regarding research activities

The Department of Architecture is involved in numerous research and development projects. With more than 160 registered doctoral students at the TUM Graduate School, the department is one of the strongest in the German-speaking countries in terms of the number of doctoral students. The department is a leader when it comes to research reputation and performance in the area of German architecture training facilities. The exceptionally good link with Engineering Sciences at TUM deserves a special mention.

Support for founders

TUM-Venture-Land ‘Built Environment’: Support of education/venture programmes, team matching and financing through to office space, laboratory facilities and a large industrial network with experts and decision-makers. Teams with the potential for a successful start-up receive extensive support in product development and the necessary infrastructure at TUM, at Munich’s Urban Colab and at UnternehmerTUM.

Other special features

Our central task is to sustainably improve teaching and research in our field and to develop strategies for the transformation of our built environment. On the basis of our core activity of designing, we synthesise, contextualise and create complex spatial solutions. It is our vision to successfully integrate design practice into research.
