Special features regarding teaching

The Architecture Department offers a unique studio system involving at least 3 teaching areas. This interdisciplinary instruction thus matches up with the subsequent job description. Its size (Germany’s smallest university department) provides a personal atmosphere. Students are also personally supervised by professors. All students work on a semester project as part of All School Charrette, the department-wide study week. The entire department goes on a trip during Excursion Week.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Alongside the standard Erasmus links with Spain, Italy, Poland and Portugal, there is also a range of direct contact with higher education institutions in Asia and South America. Special programmes such as summer schools or student exchanges are regularly offered here. At the same time, the direct contact with the lecturers also enables great individual freedom in shaping the international focus.

Special features regarding the equipment

24-hour workshop for model-making for use in traditional, artisanal machining and materials-tailored; digital workshop for cutting, engraving, milling and printing in 3D. Bright workstations for clean sketches and designs; as well as a studio workshop and robot arm; Library for research and reflection

Special features regarding research activities

Field of sustainability, including ‘t-lab wood architecture and wood materials’, convertible wood hybrid, standardisation, etc.; ‘Research Culture in Architecture’ international conference series (between university-based and applied research) ; Focus on lightweight concrete technology (cooperation with Department of Civil Engineering); Geometric-mathematical structures as approaches for design processes and digital architectural geometry; Artistic research of contemporary sculpture around the term ‘Baroque’; Landscape Architecture: Bauhaus, training history

Support for founders

For those interested in founding a start-up, and for young entrepreneurs, further training seminars are offered by the Economics Department, e.g.: From business idea to customer benefit; Market analysis; Identification of target groups; Pricing for innovations

Other special features

As of the 2017/18 winter semester, the department has established a unique studio model in which students can gain a Bachelor's, Master's or Diplom degree. All students work in manageable studio sizes in the department itself with direct supervision by the teaching staff. This promotes intensive academic exchange and intensifies individual support. The architecture gallery at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern belongs to the department and is unique in Germany. It regularly hosts internal and external events.
