Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The flexible teaching and learning system is an essential quality feature of the faculty's study programme. Based on the blended learning concept, printed and digital study guides are supplemented by technology-based learning environments and tools that are used according to subject-specific and didactic requirements for the provision of content as well as for communication and collaboration.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Studies and examinations are possible in distance learning around the world. Currently, about 7% of students at the open university live abroad, and about 9% at the Faculty of Mathematics.

Special features regarding the equipment

Teaching is carried out alongside analogue and digital teaching texts using the Moodle virtual teaching and learning platform, which offers a large number of other digital learning opportunities. Assignments are sometimes also handled via an online exercise system during the semester. Online exams and the entire final thesis process take place here. All online resources are accessible via the central "studyPORT” system. The library offers the students databases with both subject-specific and interdisciplinary sources of information.

Special features regarding research activities

To promote junior academics, the open university offers the Graduate Service for junior academics and a central contact point for the qualification process. The Graduate Service serves as a contact point for those interested in completing a doctorate, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral students in questions of orientation and qualification, and provides information about their academic career. The Graduate Service supports the networking of Hagen's junior scientists with a variety of target group-specific offers.

Other special features

Diversity plays a very important role because the student organisation at the open university is characterised by their diversity and heterogeneity: age, origin, professional background, family life situation. This is a challenge and an opportunity at the same time. Therefore, there is an ongoing reflection on the study system and the current forms of teaching and supervision in order to points and to an appreciative approach to diversity.
