Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In the teaching programme, problem-oriented learning is emphasised. In addition, alternative teaching concepts (beyond lectures) are created and structured solutions are suggested towards an individual design for the duration of the study. In the project "Humboldt Reloaded", students already have the possibility to cooperate in current research projects of the institutes during the basic courses. Students have access to a wide range of topics thanks to the close cooperation between the Faculties of Agricultural and Natural Sciences. The university has large experimental sites and many laboratories.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Practical research work with direct contact to lecturers allow the master's degree at the University of Hohenheim to stand out and prepares students optimally for a career in research, industry or agriculture. In Hohenheim, students determine the structure of their studies themselves. They can study the subject in its entirety or focus on agrobiology, biodiversity and integrative taxonomy, biomolecular interactions, or the adaptation of plants to their environment.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Erasmus+ programme for study purposes in programme countries (KA 131); Swiss - European Mobility Programme; Overseas exchange programme; State programmes in Baden-Wuerttemberg; For exchange students and free movers, the department offers semester packages with modules in various subject areas that can be studied in English.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Repräsentative Austauschhochschulen: Wageningen University & Research, Wageningen, Niederlande; University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finnland; Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Prag, Tschechische Republik; Agricultural University of Athens, Athen, Griechenland; Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, Südafrika; University of Georgia, Athens, USA

Special features regarding the equipment

For the "Hohenheim Centre for Livestock Microbiome Research", a new research building is currently being built with special laboratories for in vitro and tissue techniques as well as state-of-the-art large-scale equipment. It is used specifically to conduct laboratory experiments on animal feed and biological samples from livestock, cell tissues and microorganisms.

Special features regarding research activities

Biology / Biosciences at Hohenheim focuses on the laws of life of microorganisms, plants and animals. In its research, the department focuses on biological interactions, such as the interactions of organisms with their animate and inanimate environments, but also the interactions between organs or cells, all of which are ultimately mediated by biomolecular interactions. The Experimental Station for Agricultural Sciences, the KomBioTa and the State Institutes for Apiculture and Seed Breeding provide a wide range of methods.

Other special features

Bioeconomy is the guiding theme of the University of Hohenheim: The bioeconomy is a holistic concept for a sustainable economy that conserves both energy and resources. The raw materials come from plants, animals, microorganisms or from organic waste streams. As the leading agricultural university in Germany, the University of Hohenheim focuses on researching efficiently managed and climate-resilient agroecosystems for the environmentally and nature-friendly production of biomass and food.
