Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The flexible teaching and learning system is an essential quality feature of the Institute's study programme. Based on the blended learning concept, printed and digital study guides are supplemented by technology-based learning environments and tools that are used according to subject-specific and didactic requirements for the provision of content as well as for communication and collaboration.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There has been a cooperation with the Spanish distance learning university UNED and the B.A. degree programme since 2022: B.A. students can participate in a virtual semester abroad at UNED, while UNED students can participate in a virtual semester abroad at the open university. In the MA degree programme, there is currently a cooperation with Wageningen University, Education and Learning Science, Arizona State University, Centre for Science and the Imagination and Ca’Foscari University of Venice, Department of Asian and North African Studies within the framework of the "SpecMeth" project.

Special features regarding the equipment

The teaching of learning content is significantly supplemented by the Moodle virtual teaching and study platform, which offers a large number of other digital study programmes. Homework and online exams are handled digitally using an online exercise system. The library of the FernUniversität Hagen offers its students databases with both subject-specific and interdisciplinary sources of information.

Special features regarding research activities

Involvement of the Institute for Political Science in the following research priorities and groups: Energy, Environment & Sustainability (scientific leadership), CoVio – Collective Violence. Research Network Collective Violence (in cooperation with the Ruhr University Bochum), Gender Politics; Project "KommZuEU: Municipalities as anchors of cohesion in the European multi-level system" (Federal Ministry of Education and Research); Interdisciplinary project "Lawsuits and citizens' petitions as obstacles to the expansion of wind energy in Germany ('Hemm-den-Wind')" (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection).

Other special features

Diversity plays a very important role because the student organisation at the open university is characterised by their diversity and heterogeneity: age, origin, professional background, family life situation. This is a challenge and an opportunity at the same time. Therefore, there is an ongoing reflection on the study system and the current forms of teaching and supervision in order to points and to an appreciative approach to diversity.
