Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The flexible teaching and learning system is an essential quality feature of the Institute's study programme. Based on the blended learning concept, printed and digital study guides are supplemented by technology-based learning environments and tools that are used according to subject-specific and didactic requirements for the provision of content as well as for communication and collaboration.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The diverse professional and private commitments of their students mean that traditional instruments to promote student mobility, such as the definition of a mobility window in the degree programme design, often fail to have the desired effect. The open university is therefore characterised in particular by an international orientation in line with its student body: In addition to the "classic" semester abroad, there is also the option of a virtual stay abroad at international distance learning universities. Completing internships abroad is supported.

Special features regarding the equipment

The teaching of learning content is significantly supplemented by the Moodle virtual teaching and study platform, which offers a large number of other digital study programmes. Homework and online exams are handled digitally using an online exercise system. The library of the FernUniversität Hagen offers its students databases with both subject-specific and interdisciplinary sources of information.

Special features regarding research activities

Involvement of the Institute of Sociology in the following research priorities and groups: digital_culture, Work – Education – Digitalisation, CoVio – Collective Violence. Collective violence research network (in cooperation with the Ruhr University Bochum); Network "Qualitative Family Research"; Participation in the Leibniz ScienceCampus ReForm (Ruhr University Bochum); International research project "People Analytics" (funded by the DFG/SNF); Research project "Data cultures in the personnel management of SMEs in North Rhine-Westphalia" (funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia).

Other special features

Diversity plays a very important role because the student organisation at the open university is characterised by their diversity and heterogeneity: age, origin, professional background, family life situation. This is a challenge and an opportunity at the same time. Therefore, there is an ongoing reflection on the study system and the current forms of teaching and supervision in order to points and to an appreciative approach to diversity.
