Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Sociology is characterised above all by the fact that, despite the relatively large cohorts in the Bachelor's degree programme, there are only a few lectures. The degree programmes are set up to be extremely discursive. In the first semester, in addition to the introductory lectures (the proportion of which decreases steadily over the course of the degree programme), students take part in accompanying seminars where there is plenty of room for exchange and discussion.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programme offers a fundamental sociology programme that teaches the subject in its theoretical and methodological diversity and fully reflects the principles of the discipline. Compared to the Bachelor's degree, the cohorts are significantly smaller, which enables even closer student guidance. In addition, the faculty emphasises a variety of topics in the teaching programme, and students have the opportunity to select seminars and teaching research projects based on their own areas of interest.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The discipline promotes and supports the international exchange of students and is therefore very interested in a wide range of international collaborations.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has its own computer pool with 20 seats available. Subject-specific software is installed on these computers (more than in the university CIP clusters).

Special features regarding research activities

In the department, a number of third-party funds have been raised over the past few years for different research areas (see website). In addition, there were (and are) two research centres in the department. The "Potsdam Centre for Quantitative Research" (PCQR), whose goal is to network the professorships' research and increase output. As part of the "Centre for Citizenship, Social Pluralism and Religious Diversity", workshops and conferences were held with international academics and 12 book editions were published during the course of the funding.

Other special features

The specialist group includes two functional positions with an increased teaching load: Methods of Empirical Social Research; Sociology of Gender. In addition, two unscheduled professorships: professorship in Applied Social Research and Public Policy (Open Topic); professorship of Social Inequality and Social Policy (jointly appointed with the WZB)
