Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Well-founded introduction through a preparatory course, an introduction to methods and an introduction to the basic concepts of sociology. A wide range of compulsory elective modules in the most important sub-disciplines. As part of the optional module, interdisciplinary courses can be selected from the offerings of the Goethe University. An internship provides initial professional experience. The aim is the communication of content-based and methodological skills as well as the ability to work independently in accordance with scientific principles and to reflect critically on social contexts.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programmes impart well-founded methodological and theoretical knowledge. In the Sociology MA, a lecture cycle introduces students to the specialized areas of work represented at the institute. In addition to a wide range of choices in their own focus areas, the sociological Master's degree programmes have a strong research orientation. In research internships, students' own theories are developed and implemented in research practice. As part of the optional module (MA Sociology), interdisciplinary courses can be selected from the offerings of the Goethe University.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department's own Office of International Affairs coordinates internationalisation activities, especially in the areas of academic studies and teaching. Students and doctoral candidates receive subject-related information and advice on studying and internships abroad. In addition to a purely English-language master's degree, the faculty offers a large number of courses as well as preparatory English language courses for social scientists. Guest scientists from renowned foreign universities are regularly involved in the range of courses.
