Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Department of Sociology in Göttingen offers students the opportunity to explore various areas such as the world of work, the welfare state or intercultural coexistence in addition to basics. Through the cooperation opportunities on the Göttingen Campus with research institutes, connections to current research projects can be established and students can experience empirical social research "as a profession". Through the selection of the second subject or area of competence, students gain interdisciplinary skills. Faculty services such as an internship office or writing advice support students throughout their studies.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programmes in Sociology and "Work in Business and Society" focus on research-oriented teaching and learning. Exciting teaching research projects and cooperations on the Göttingen Campus with research institutions such as the SOFI or MPI provide insights into "empirical social research as a profession" and provide access to current research projects. Interdisciplinary approaches, specialisation in work or cultural sociology and inequality research as well as methods courses offer very good preparation for further scientific activities or the employment market.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Students are given the opportunity to study abroad or to participate in BIP and to contribute the acquired credits to their studies. The University of Göttingen is part of ENLIGHT "European university Network to promote equitable quality of life, sustainability and Global engagement through Higher education Transformation" and actively supports the network's shared BIP. For example, students can take part in the "Global Engagement Module 2024" or "AI for everyone". In 2024, a joint classroom of the SozGoe with UvA (NL)+UDD (Chile) on Sustainable Development Goals will take place as BIP.

Special features regarding research activities

The diverse research perspectives at the institute are combined into a common focus on social inequalities. This includes, for example, digital transformation, social consequences of homelessness or interactions between work and migration. Close research collaborations exist with the Sociological Research Institute (SOFI) and the MPI MMG on a ; transdisciplinary basis at the Campus Institute for Data Science (CIDAS). Results of ongoing research are directly integrated into teaching; The teaching research projects in the degree courses also enable research-orientated learning.
