Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Our degree programmes have a modular structure with a large number of internships. Students receive support in small groups from their peers and lecturers in the form of supplemental exercises. The versatile curriculum enables students to acquire hybrid qualifications in additional non-biochemistry subjects, such as law and other natural sciences. In addition to internships that supplement the lectures and small-group exercises, we provide digital course content, such as video-recorded lectures, blended learning, and inverted classrooms.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Our English-language courses are modular and highly rated with a high proportion of internships and early involvement in research. In small group exercises, students receive close supervision. Students can design their degree programme individually thanks to the wide range of specialisations. The versatile curriculum enables students to acquire hybrid qualifications in additional non-biochemistry subjects. In addition to internships that supplement the lectures, we provide digital offerings, such as video-recorded lectures and inverted classrooms.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The three Master's courses offered by the faculty (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Sciences) are held entirely and exclusively in English. A work placement at a foreign partner university is a compulsory element of the Molecular Sciences degree course. As part of the UNIC agreement, we promote student mobility and social integration with partner universities.

Special features regarding the equipment

As one of the third largest chemistry faculties, we have extensive modern equipment with large-scale equipment, as well as laboratory and office work places. Various special laboratories are also located in the ZEMOS research building. Practical training takes place in well-equipped laboratories with modern practical experiments. Students have access to databases and various research opportunities in our departmental library. Our central facilities are our specialized workshops, which manufacture specific test equipment and accessories, and the NMR department.

Special features regarding research activities

The department leads coordinated research projects in the fields of solvation, catalysis research, surface and materials research, and molecular and biomolecular chemistry. The modern research building "ZEMOS" houses the RESOLVE cluster of excellence. Our work groups are involved in numerous EU projects, the Centre for Electrochemical Sciences, as well as numerous BMBF and DFG projects. There is also close networking with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology.

Other special features

The working groups of our faculty devote themselves to intensive research activities involving sustainable, future-relevant topics. Students have the opportunity during their studies to work with the topic of sustainability through these research fields in particular. Further campus-wide activities in the field of sustainability and diversity are initiated by student groups, such as the NABU University Group, the Studigarten and youngperspectives.ruhr, as well as groups for gay and lesbian students and women, the RUB Autonome Schwulenreferat and the RUB Autonome Lesben- und Frauenreferat.
