Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The BA is characterised by dual education and training in qualitative and quantitative research methods and different theories. These skills will be put to the test on social matters during the BA degree course.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

At the centre of the course of study is a two-semester empirical project. Students can choose from qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods projects. The theoretical and methodological training is applied to a concrete (real) research subject. In addition, the MA degree programme includes a chance for students to become lecturers by providing a tutorial (while receiving subject-specific and didactic support) in the BA degree programme.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Institute faculty offers numerous additional courses for the internationalisation of studies (and teaching). These include: Interdisciplinary courses related to social sciences; Certificate for international competence; Numerous language courses for beginners and advanced learners; ICON – International Student Conference.

The University Library of the University of Mainz provides students and researchers with a wide variety of databases for study and research.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute of Sociology is a research-oriented institute with a number of externally funded research projects and collaborative research projects. Collaborations with non-university institutions include the Federal Institute for Population Research (BIB) and the IEG. The Institute is also significantly involved in the Collaborative Research Centre "Human Differentiation" (CRC 1482).

Other special features

The Institute of Sociology is committed to JGU's diversity strategy. The Institute of Sociology is located in a modern, resource-saving building and thus relies on ecological and economic sustainability. With regard to social sustainability, it can be pointed out that all status groups (professors, academic staff, students, administrative staff) of the Institute are systematically involved in decision-making.
