Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In the second half of the course, the knowledge and skills acquired in the first part of the course (theory, methods, special sociology) are applied and tested in practice through a 2-semester teaching research project in group work.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Master's degree programme in Sociology, teaching is fundamentally characterised by the close interlinking of the courses and content with the research projects of the teaching staff. Teaching formats designed around dialogue in the Master's degree programme in Social Theory encourage the exchange ideas on course content as well as on questions and methodological procedures for final theses. In addition to other events such as seminars and lectures, they enable the acquisition of skills in the field of academic cooperation and a culture of dialogue.

Special features regarding the equipment

The institute has a method laboratory with 40 computer workstations for training in the quantitative methods of empirical social research. The institute has a CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) lab that can be used for survey practice. The CATI lab is used for many of the projects carried out at the institute.

Special features regarding research activities

With the CRC/Transregio 294 "Structural Change of Property", according to the CRC 580 "Social Developments after Systems Change. Discontinuity, Tradition and Structural Formation" (2001-2012) Now the second Collaborative Research Centre to be based at the Institute since 2021. In this – and numerous other – research projects, the Institute pursues the goal of not only describing social conditions, but also contributing to the critique of relations of domination, inequality and/or exploitation in a theoretically well-founded and empirically sound manner..
