Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Large thematic variety with many opportunities for in-depth majors (specialisations in: migration, gender, sociology of categorisation, urban sociology, the global south, educational sociology, sociology of inequality, family sociology), with research-oriented training and a wide range of methodological training in both quantitative and qualitative areas.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Strong research orientation, for example in three-semester teaching research projects, in-depth training in quantitative and qualitative methodologies based on current research projects in the mentioned subject areas. International orientation through the English-speaking MPPSC, also English-language courses in the other degree programmes. Collaborations with other disciplines (especially politics, educational science, empirical cultural research).

Special features regarding the international orientation

Partnerships exist with a large number of partner universities within and outside Europe. Regular exchange with visiting scholars in the form of visiting professorships and teaching assignments. High proportion of English-taught courses in the master's course. Internationally orientated "MPPSC" degree course Project collaborations with scientists from NL, Poland and Sweden (e.g. DFG Research Training Group on Mental Health of Women together with Uppsala University, Sweden, including joint lectures for doctoral students)

Special features regarding the equipment

Thanks to ongoing investments, the technical equipment at the institute is good, especially in Aerospace Engineering (video projector and audio system, overhead scanner). Students can use the institute's laptops for presentations as needed. The computer pools are up to date and standard software packages for statistical and qualitative analyses are available and easily accessible.

Special features regarding research activities

Numerous third-party-funded research projects, for example, Family Policy and Gender Norms, (Un)doing Gender in Romantic Relationships of Young Adults, Doing Transitions & Women's Mental Health Across the Reproductive Years, Gender Differences in Family Transition Phases, "Making Up People" in global society, ethnically heterogeneous and unequal neighbourhoods in the Global South (CRC 923 "Threatened Orders"), social identity and social cohesion, social inequality and educational success, participation in the "Global Proximities" cluster of excellence initiative.

Other special features

Master's degree programme in Sociology with a specialisation in the field of Diversity and Society. Close cooperation (including staff involvement via the Institute's gender professorship) with the Centre for Gender and Diversity Research at the University of Tübingen, which will also offer a certification degree course starting in 2024 in addition to many other offerings. At university level, there is a Diversity Office, a Family Office and an Gender Equality Office, as well as an Athene programme whcih aims to support women.
