Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The in-depth theoretical education and training ensures that students won't end up in specializations that are too narrow and provides a high degree of insight into the complexity of human living environments. Anther special feature is in-depth training on implementing qualitative or quantitative projects. At the same time, the module of the academic year also offers students the opportunity to carry out independent projects, internships or stays abroad.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The students acquire in-depth knowledge of classical and contemporary social theories as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods; they relate this knowledge to concrete phenomena and apply it under guidance in independent research practice. The aim is for students to familiarise themselves with different social science topics and to design their own research projects. The Master's degree programme particularly emphasises the importance of social science theories as a knowledge tool and is characterised by a close link between qualitative and quantitative methods.

Special features regarding the international orientation

More than half (60%) of the students in the BA core subject undertake a study-related stay abroad, most of them as part of the Erasmus programme. The proportion of MA students is lower at 35%. As part of EUCOR, students at the Upper Rhine universities of Strasbourg, Basel, Mulhouse, Colmar, Karlsruhe and Freiburg can take up courses of study that are recognised at their home university. There are also regular cooperations with the colleagues of the Basel Institute on the part of the lecturers, including the joint supervision of master's theses.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Helsingin Yliopisto, Helsinki, Finnland; Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Lissabon, Portugal; Universidad de Murcia, Murcia, Spanien; Université de Bordeaux, Bordeuax, Frankreich; Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza', Rom, Italien; Altınbaş Uni, Istanbul, Türkei; Göteborgs Universitet, Göteburg, Schweden; Uniwersytet Warszawski, Warchau, Polen; Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spanien; Univerzita Karlova, Prag, Tschechien

Special features regarding research activities

Particularly noteworthy is the connection with various interdisciplinary institutions such as the "Centre for Security and Society", the Centre for Anthropology and Gender Studies (ZAG), the CRC 948 "Heros, Heroisations, Heroisms" as well as at inter- and transdisciplinary non-university research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security + Law, the Institute for Related Areas of Psychology and Psychohygiene, or the Forestry Research Institute. Students have a variety of opportunities to participate in the projects.
