Special features regarding teaching

Several compulsory elective modules, e.g. project assignments, for individual specialisation in the Bachelor's programme; Collaboration of Bachelor’s students in research projects through integrated curricular project assignments; Interdisciplinary project assignments with the participation of students from various disciplines; Integrated practice semester, which can be completed either as a semester abroad at a university or as a work placement at a company abroad; Unique linking of the topics environment, sustainability, business and computer science in courses.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In the (compulsory) elective area, students have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary, intercultural and virtual projects with various French engineering universities (including Toulouse, Rennes, Rouen and Strasbourg). In these bilingual (German-French) projects, topics from the field of sustainability (e.g. "Monitoring in the National Park") are increasingly tackled in an intercultural, blended learning approach: In most cases, a face-to-face workshop follows the virtual collaboration.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spanien; Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata, Rom, Italien; Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), Dundalk, Irland; Dalarna University, Dalarna, Schweden; Université de Technologie de Belfort-Montbéliard, Belfort, Frankreich; John von Neumann University, Kecskemét, Ungarn; University of Silesia, Katowice, Polen; Regent University, Accra, Ghana; Clemson University, South Carolina, USA; Ajou University, Suwon, Korea

Special features regarding the equipment

Computer science labs with state-of-the-art technology: Software Engineering: Agile development and application of software systems; KI laboratory; Geomatics lab: Geoinformation systems, environmental sensors, land surveying; Microprocessor lab and makerspace INNODIG: Circuit development, soldering station, 3D printing, laser cutter, insulation milling machine, sensor/actuator technology, Internet of Things; Media computer science labs in the field of photography/film production: High-quality cameras, film light, studio flash equipment, light shapers as well as labs for interactive media and augmented reality: Multimedia applications, 3D interaction, gesture control

Special features regarding research activities

The research is carried out by the Institute of Software Systems at the university. The focus is on the development and evaluation of information systems to support sustainable development, for example to promote renewable energy production or climate protection, to increase resource efficiency, etc. The institute is one of the few research institutions nationwide that deal with questions of sustainable development from the perspective of computer science. The institute is involved in various public administration R&D projects, especially in the field of AI and IoT.

Support for founders

Business start-ups are supported by the university's Start-up Office. Because of the “Start-up and Innovation Region Southwest+” project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, since April 2020 entrepreneurial action has been increasingly integrated into the curriculum and the networking with regional businesses has been expanded. Formats are designed specifically for the subject area of Computer Science, leading to interdisciplinary "matching" with students from other faculties. Through the project, "Start-up Professors" were recruited to raise awareness for sector-specific start-ups.

Other special features

All Computer Science degree courses are interlinked. Students can take exciting compulsory elective courses and complete projects from related degree courses. Projects in which teams work across subject boundaries (e.g. with students from Engineering, Business Administration, etc.) are also part of the study programme. This is not only inspiring, but also very good preparation for professional life. The university participates in the Green Metrics competition and has been certified as a Fairtrade University as well as a family-friendly university.
