Special features regarding teaching

Tourism is a very practice-oriented field. To convey the challenges facing tourism companies, destinations and organisations to students in a contemporary way, it makes sense to be very close to the industry. This is achieved by excursions, guest lectures and project assignments in close cooperation with providers. An active exchange with industry is absolutely essential for modern studies in tourism management.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Faculty European Campus Rottal-Inn is an internationally oriented faculty; all programmes are conducted in English. The composition of the student body is therefore very international - students from around 80 nations are currently enrolled in the faculty. Great importance is attached to teaching on site as, in addition to subject-specific knowledge, intercultural competencies such as work in international project teams are taught. In addition, there are also corresponding online or hybrid offers.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Universidad de León, Spanien; University of Aruba; Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Finnland; Lapland University of Applied Sciences, Finnland; University of Nicosia, Zypern; Kookmin University, Südkorea; Universidad de Marista, Mexiko; Universidad de Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Special features regarding the equipment

The seminar rooms of the European Campus are equipped to enable online and hybrid formats in addition to classroom teaching. This is to give students who cannot travel the opportunity to participate in courses. The campus has a "SmartTourism lab" in which current ICT applications in tourism are taught, applications from robotics in tourism are trained, and which features equipment for biometric research in the tourism sector (eye tracking, skin conductivity, facial recognition).

Special features regarding research activities

Research and development projects address the topics and challenges facing the (health) tourism industry at local, national and international levels. These include the development of up-to-date and competitive, evidence-based health tourism services (e.g. forests), the development of practical and future-oriented training for health tourism professionals as part of a DAAD project and the development of models for employee recruitment, qualification and retention in health tourism destinations.

Support for founders

Deggendorf Institute of Technology has a start-up campus as part of an Institute for Business Start-ups. Here, students are supported and introduced to starting their own business. The topic of starting a business is also of great importance within the curriculum, both in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes. We work closely with the regional Start-up Centre on site to provide students with the best possible support, starting from the preliminary phase of a potential start-up.

Other special features

The European Campus Rottal-Inn Faculty runs its own sustainability lab, whose task is to give professors and teaching staff the best possible support in implementing the topic in their courses. The study programmes are aligned with the UN SDGs. Going forward, the sustainability lab will review all activities in the faculty - within the programmes as well as in R&D - in terms of their compliance with the SDGs, and will optimise them.
