Special features regarding teaching

All classical areas of law are represented in teaching in the faculty. In addition, teaching staff have special expertise in the field of modern legal didactics, which is necessary to offer a Law degree in a blended learning mix. They are supported in this by a specialist media educator. All lecturers are active in online-based distance learning and use the corresponding teaching and now also examination methods. In this context, the faculty has the "In Iure Institute for Legal Didactics".

Special features regarding the international orientation

Over the past five years, the faculty has gradually expanded its international networks (including through Erasmus+ funding, DAAD-IVAC 2020/2021) and is increasingly focusing its teaching on cooperative modules in English. These include the module "Public International Law", which was developed in cooperation with international university partners, and easily accessible Open Educational Resources, such as "Legal English I and II", "Research Methods in EU Law" and "Interdisciplinary Legal Research", which are offered via their platform open.edelnet.eu.

Special features regarding the equipment

Extensive access to modern teaching systems and corresponding didactic and technical support. Teaching management systems; Systems for digital exams; Cloud solutions for students and teaching staff; Video conferencing software; Video and audio studios. All campus locations are equipped with hybrid technology and can also be used by students for study groups. Excellent (remote) range of databases via the library.

Special features regarding research activities

The faculty is involved in the following interdisciplinary research focus areas of the open university in Hagen: CATALPA – Centre of Advanced Technology for Assisted Learning and Predictive Analytics; Energy, Environment & Sustainability; Institute Work – Education – Digitalisation; It also has the following research institutes: Dimitris Tsatsos Institute for European Constitutional Studies, Institute for International Legal Relations, Japanese Law, Institute for Contemporary Legal History, Kurt Haertel Institute of Intellectual Property, Contarini Institute

Other special features

The faculty specifically facilitates study for working people, people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and people in special circumstances. From 2015-2018, the faculty successfully passed the university-wide “Creating Diversity” audit, and it has its own Equal Opportunities Plan. All courses and the facilities are barrier-free. For many years, the faculty has offered courses in the areas of anti-discrimination law, the law of equality and gender competence.
