Special features regarding teaching

The consecutive Bachelor’s/Master’s degree programme in Materials Science at the University of Stuttgart is located in the Chemistry Department. These degree programmes (Bachelor’s/Master’s) have a very strong profile in the natural sciences. The relationship between material properties and the structure and characterisation of materials is considered from the perspective of solid-state chemistry and physics. A new and important element is teaching from the field of computer-aided materials science, simulation and machine learning.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Students can earn a double academic degree through the Master´s degree programme in Materials Science. The double degree in Materials Science/Materials Engineering is offered in cooperation with Chalmers University of Technology. Participating students complete the first 2 semesters at the University of Stuttgart. The final two semesters are spent at Chalmers University of Technology. Graduates of the ‘double degree’ receive a degree in Materials Engineering from Chalmers and in Materials Science from the University of Stuttgart.

Special features regarding research activities

The Department of Materials Science at the University of Stuttgart is part of a broad network of excellent research institutions (including 2 Max Planck Institutes). Research focuses: Development of new electrode materials for high-performance batteries; Development of Proton and Electron Conductive Perovskites for Ceramic Fuel Cells; Development of new materials for hydrogen storage; Conceptual design of new investigation methods on an atomic scale; Development and synthesis of bionopirated materials; Computer simulation of materials
