The department attaches great importance to broad, application-oriented teaching. Small groups instead of mass lectures are typical, as is close integration of theory and practice. Regular feedback discussions and evaluations are an integral part of the course. New teaching formats are used in many places. The concept of cross-module skills focuses on the acquisition of skills. The DHBW model is proven: In 6 semesters, students receive a full-fledged Bachelor of Science, which opens many doors, as they will have already gained valuable practical experience.

In the sixth semester, students of technical degree programmes can participate in the International Programme in Engineering (IPE). In addition, there are various summer schools (e.g. in South America) and the opportunity to spend practical phases at locations abroad of the dual partners.

Students can try out innovative concepts in the digital factory. There are two computer clusters available for particularly demanding tasks. Various vehicles can be used to test new approaches to autonomous driving. There are also various laboratories that are used for projects and courses. The library maintains an extensive range of specialist literature, which can be accessed predominantly online.

The department focuses on research in the fields of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Particularly noteworthy are the activities in the fields of autonomous driving, swarm intelligence, logistics, Industry 4.0 and production analytics. The faculty
