Special features regarding teaching

Practice-oriented teaching: A topic is covered in a lecture and deepened in exercises and labs. small practice groups Specialisations depending on the degree course. Project assignments (teamwork) are anchored in the course of study. Work placement (10 weeks) and the Bachelor's thesis (3 months) in industry. Elective modules allow specialisation based on interest. Interdisciplinary teaching (looking at the bigger picture), e.g. languages. Teaching staff are approachable and must have worked in industry for several years before working at the university.

Special features regarding the equipment

A SCALE-UP room has been set up to support digitally supported learning in a team. On five group islands, students can sketch on the interactive screen, edit tasks, share content from their devices easily and present the results at the front on the main screen. The labs in the faculty are state-of-the-art. Laser cutter, lab for immersion research, automation technology; E-learning: Moodle/LMS; Licences: MATLAB, Ansys Simulation Software, LabVIEW.

Special features regarding research activities

Research is carried out in the following competence centres: Pattern recognition and machine learning: Monitoring of fish stocks and interpretation of optical sensor data for autonomous ferries. Renewable Energies and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein with the storage of renewable energies. Underwater technology (autonomous underwater vehicles): For the maintenance of offshore wind turbines or to assist in searching for mines on the seabed. Electromobility: Development of a battery management system for monitoring the state of charge of individual battery cells.

Support for founders

In our Start-up Office, interested students, alumni and research assistants at Kiel University of Applied Sciences have a point of contact for all things relating to start-ups and entrepreneurship. Services include the following: Assistance in developing ideas, developing business models, business concept, exploration of funding and financing instruments and networking with partners from academia and industry. In the faculty, professors provide support, facilities and technical equipment for research activities.

Other special features

Cultural activities on the campus: Mediendom (media dome), observatory, Bunker D with cinema and pub, computer museum and CampusKulTour. Sustainability: In the Office for Sustainable Development, the topic of sustainability is further developed with various projects, e.g. Green & Clean, flinc, orchards, water dispensers and VeloCampus. Diversity: The Institute of Interdisciplinary Gender Research and Diversity at Kiel University of Applied Sciences initiates, coordinates and conducts projects and studies on gender- and diversity-specific issues in various fields of research, in particular in the STEM fields.
