Special features regarding teaching

The Faculty of Design - Computer Science - Media is characterised by project-based courses, which also take an interdisciplinary approach. All courses are supplemented by intensively supervised practical sessions and projects in small groups. The training is practice-oriented and is enriched by a practice semester and practice projects at companies. The close interlinking of applied research and teaching ensures the transfer of new findings into teaching. Computer Science is offered within a broad palette, and the degree courses benefit from the strong environment.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Faculty places special emphasis on partnerships in English-speaking regions, as well as on exchange programmes with Asia and Latin America. Student and staff mobility is encouraged in multiple ways by the international representatives of the programmes and the university’s International Office.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Computer Science courses operate joint labs with different subject areas. This covers system-related topics from Wireless LANs, Distributed Systems, System Programming and Home Automation, Software Engineering through to application-oriented problems in Digital Image Processing and Visualisation, Computer Vision and Mixed Reality, Mobile Applications and Enterprise Content Management. Likewise, a variety of computer rooms are available for practical courses and independent practice.

Special features regarding research activities

The Faculty of Design, Computer Science, Media has a strong, interdisciplinary research focus area in "Intelligent Systems for People and Technology", which examines digitalisation holistically, from technical fundamentals to human-machine interaction to economic or media aspects. The research focus area is listed in the Research Map of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) due to its research strength. The university has an independent, indefinite right to confer doctoral degrees for Applied Computer Science. In addition, artistic-design research is conducted at the faculty.

Support for founders

The Competence & Career Centre of the RhineMain University offers students who are in interested in business start-ups free entrepreneurship advice as well as an elective module “Business Start-Up” and various information sessions. There is also a Start-up Ambassador in the faculty as well as courses on starting a business.

Other special features

The Faculty of Design, Computer Science, Media is one of the first faculties in a German university of applied sciences to be awarded an independent right to award doctorates in the field of Computer Science due to its strength in research.
