Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Molecular Biotechnology department in the technical faculty is currently organized into four work groups. In addition, there are work groups from Chemistry, Biology and Physics. An advantage of the small MBT degree courses are small groups with 2 people in the practicals and intensive advisory services. This allows everyone to get to know each lecturer and student personally. A degree programme coordinator is the contact person for all the student needs. Semesters abroad are possible in the BSc or MSc.

The teaching (especially in the Master's programme) is oriented toward the staff's own research projects this familiarises students with the format of the research.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The research groups have good connections to international work groups. Students can spend their semester (or 2) abroad with various Erasmus partners (here we cooperate with other faculties of the university for even more opportunities) or worldwide via the DAAD. Other options, such as the Fullbright Scholarship for the USA, offer further opportunities.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Kroatien; University of Liège, Liège, Belgien; Autonome Universität Madrid, Madrid, Spanien; KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Schweden

Special features regarding the equipment

Good biotechnological equipment is available in the department for the various disciplines (upstream/process or culturing/downstream & analysis for microorganisms and cell cultures). Other platforms (including genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) can be used thanks to the good connection to the CEBITEC (Centre for Biotechnology). Because Bielefeld University is largely housed in the main building, the paths between physics, biology and chemistry are very short – there are many collaborations under one roof.

Special features regarding research activities

Project work, final theses and specialisation internships are always linked to current research projects. Outside the university, biotechnology students have been taking part for years in the international iGEM competition, which is also organised by the department. Internships and final theses are also carried out at other institutes or in industry; certain biotech companies are easily accessible in the city or region.

Other special features

Bielefeld has the largest site of the Biotechnological Students Initiative in Germany: btS Life Science Bielefeld e.V.; Gender equality & diversity are established values at the university in Bielefeld and at home.; The university integrated sustainability into its mission statement and continues to learn and develop this area.
