Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The teaching and research of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences focuses on people, either as individuals in their environment, in social interaction or as actors in social groups. A special feature of the faculty is its plurality, as it consists of a total of six specialist groups: Educational Science, Geography and Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Sports Science. The faculty has a total of three Bachelor's degree programmes: combined Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The teaching and research of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences focuses on people, either as individuals in their environment, in social interaction or as actors in social groups. A special feature of the faculty is its plurality, as it consists of a total of six specialist groups: Educational Science, Geography and Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Sports Science. The faculty has six Master's degree programmes, including a Master's degree with a double degree in Political Science.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Institute of Political Science at Bergische Universität enables its students to participate in the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) funded by Erasmus+. The programme took place in the summer of 2023 with the participation of various universities from countries bordering the Danube on the topic "The future of Europe in the Danube region" at Andrassy University Budapest.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Faculty of Human and Social Sciences has its own IT support, and the Centre for Information and Media Processing (ZIM) has access to technical equipment such as laptops, projectors, video cameras and speakers. The university library provides students with access to interdisciplinary and subject-specific databases.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute for Democracy and Participatory Research (IDPF) conducts research on direct-democratic and participatory procedures. Based on the research results, the institute advises, among others, state chancelleries of the federal states as well as federal and state ministries and citizens' initiatives. The interdisciplinary Centre for Transformation Research and Sustainability (transzent) conducts research – with the participation of political science – on the topics of regional economics, sustainable mobility & energy, political economy & social theory, and education for sustainable development.

Other special features

For students with an interest in the topics of transformation and sustainability, it is possible to obtain the "transzent" certificate, which is shown as a diploma supplement and included as an appendix to the Bachelor's degree certificate. In the winter semester, students of political and social science regularly participate in the "NRW debates Europe" competition, in the course of which they train their rhetorical skills and free speech.
