Special features regarding teaching

A wide range of specialisations in ‘Mechatronics’, ‘User Experience’ and ‘Technical Content Creation’ are offered in which engineers are trained not only to develop but also to be able to explain intelligent Mechatronics systems; Possibility of a truncated degree programme in ‘Compact Mechatronics through Recognition’ for graduates of technical schools; Close interdisciplinary cooperation in teaching with the degree course in Engineering Education; Comprehensive range of courses followed by a Master’s programme in Systems Engineering

Special features regarding the international orientation

There are flexible options for structuring the degree course internationally. In addition to English-language lectures, the practical semester and the Bachelor's thesis can be completed abroad. The 6th semester is completely reserved for the study abroad (with recognition of credits). An English-language semester in "Optoelectronics Mechatronics" is offered for international students. Mentoring for students of foreign origin by foreign office and lecturers.

Special features regarding the equipment

Laboratory for Micro and Precision Manufacturing: Production of precision and micro parts using electric discharge machining and high speed cutting processes, telematic test benches. Laboratory for Automation: Modern robotics e.g. Cobots, industrial robots with KUKA training cell, mechatronic model facilities, cloud connectivity, image processing and optical measurement technology, precision mechanical force-moment sensor technology. Rapid Prototyping: Production of components from CAD data, 3D printing Laboratory for Model-Based System Development: Control and regulation of Mechatronics systems. Sensor technology/actuator technology/shape-memory alloy laboratory.

Special features regarding research and development

Interdisciplinary project focus: "Intelligent Safe Subsea Actuation" research projects; "Smart Pro" Shape-memory alloy and actuator technology; Industry 4.0; Robotics, image processing and AI with the aim of cognitive and mobile robotics, digital twin and virtual commissioning. Projects with the degree course in Optoelectronics and centre for optical technologies in the field of active optics; Joint projects with the degree course in Ophthalmology and the Würzburg Institute for Transport Studies. Cooperation with KUKA College: Control engineering and handling as well as UX topics.

Support for founders

stAArt-Up events for company founders, stAArt-UpChallenge, Master’s degree offer: ‘Business Development / Product Management & Start-up Management’ in the department. Guest lectures and reports, lecturers from the start-up environment, coaching and mentoring offers

Other special features

Various efforts to win new target groups for the field of mechatronics (MekA, MekA-ET, study focus on user experience); Teaching award of the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in 2017 for innovative teaching concepts in mechatronics and in 2020 for digital concepts in teaching; Office for the ‘andaba’ accreditation database (database for crediting university and non-university skills of the universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg), publication of various student projects, excursions and experience-sharing with regional companies, cooperation with the KUKA College and the technical schools of the region.
