Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The sub-degree programme in geography can be studied as part of the Combined Bachelor of Arts degree. The course is divided into a core area and three profile areas. Theoretical and methodological principles of geographical thinking are taught. The sub-degree programme is not only geared towards teacher training and access to the Master of Education, but also qualifies for a career in the areas of policy advising, advising on issues of sustainable development, applied urban research and urban development, regional development and regional management.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Excursions abroad are an essential part of studying geography at the Bergische University. These have led to Andalusia, Panama and Ireland in recent years.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Faculty of Human and Social Sciences has its own IT support, and the Centre for Information and Media Processing (ZIM) has access to technical equipment such as laptops, projectors, video cameras and speakers. The university library provides students with access to interdisciplinary and subject-specific databases.

Other special features

The Education of Sustainable Development (ESD) network gives students the opportunity to discuss issues in the field of sustainability. The Geography department participates with the ESD working group and deals with issues such as human-environmental systems or various spatial concepts. Another special feature of the department is the GeoIT laboratory. Here school and university students have access to three laboratories where they can try out the application of digital geomedia and information technologies or familiarise themselves with VR technology in practice, etc. for virtual ecosystem analysis.
