Wide range of elective modules on current topics, i.e. possibility of designing your own focus of study. Students have the opportunity to participate in research projects - especially higher study semester BA and MA degree course. Practice-oriented projects as part of the course and for interdisciplinary cooperation (e.g. solar boat, Hyperloop, headwind vehicle). Student Projects/participation in pract. workshops in the FabLab)

Special features regarding the international orientation

Ba BT/BI, CT/UT: Option of intern. double degree with the Technical University of the Shannon (Ireland) in Toxicology; in SES with Univ. Turku (FIN) Energy & Environm. Eng. Poss., following assessment by the examination board, to study a semester abroad or do a practical phase (as a recognised part of the course) at one of the coop. international universities (73), an institute or in companies. Fellow students from China as part of a permanent exchange programme. Exchange with intern. students in (interdisc.) (research) projects & intern. competitions. International Office events, such as international evenings.

Special features regarding the equipment

State-of-the-art laboratories in line with the latest standards in industry and research. Direct use by students (not ‘show laboratories’). Comprehensive specialist microscope equipment, modern laboratories: e.g. instr. analytics, biotechnology, information technology, microbiology (safety level 2), food and environmental technology, process analytics, polymer chemistry, renewable raw materials, bioprocess and cell culture technology, wind energy. Extensive modernisation work has largely already been completed. Interdisciplinary Work in the new Life Sciences technology centre and FabLab.

Special features regarding research and development

Strong research activities in the field of microbiology, environmental microbiology; Metabolic physiological studies of microorganisms and their biotechnological use (wastewater and waste treatment, soil decontamination); Environmental hygiene; Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in environmental/wastewater engineering (Nds. Science Prize 2017), renewable energies, energy storage, process optimisation and modelling and simulation, biogas, wind energy, use of renewable raw materials, indoor pollutants. Methods and concepts in the fields of data science, bioinformatics and machine learning.

Other special features

Very good student-teacher ratio. Attractive campus university with short distances and a modern infrastructure. Library was modernised in 2018. There are course-specific activities that create a real sense of group membership among students. Interdisciplinary student projects (e.g. solar boat, Hyperloop, headwind vehicle) offer practical knowledge transfer, teamwork, participation in fun competitions. Also in FB T: FabLab + Repair Café. A comprehensive university sports programme + sponsored activities for an attractive student lifestyle contribute to student satisfaction.
