Special features regarding teaching

Two aspects: The Romance Languages are the subject of interdisciplinary lectures on Romance Philology and further exercises; The diversity of the Romance languages is reflected in the range of secondary languages offered at Kiel: In addition to French and Italian, Spanish and Portuguese (both European and Latin American), Romanian, Catalan and Galician are also taught. Fundamental is a historical-philological and cultural-scientific orientation of Romance Studies in Kiel.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Romance studies at Kiel offers a variety of courses in the foreign language and maintains close ties to the cultural institutes located in Kiel (Centre Culturel français, Deutsch-Französische Gesellschaft, Deutsch-Ibero-Amerikanische Gesellschaft, Società Dante Alighieri). In addition, the Romance department has numerous scientific contacts and exchange relationships with ERAMUS+ partner universities in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Latin America.

Linguistics: Culture of multilingualism in Romania; Language contact and migration; Language Policy; Formation and discussion of linguistic norms (project: ‘Ent-Fesselung der Sprache’). Literary studies: Renaissance in its European context; French Classics; The history of French theatre, the French and Italian modern novel; Lyrics of the Modern Age; The literary descriptions of the Way of St. James and European city concepts in literature are additional research interests;

A preliminary course is offered to first-year students before the start of the semester, which aims to make the transition from school to university easier, as well as an open online course to facilitate orientation for prospective and first-year students
