Special features regarding teaching

In the Bachelor's phase, Romance students study two subjects and an optional field of study. The Bachelor's degree provides them with an initial qualification to enter a profession, with which they can leave University or enter the Master's course. In the Bachelor's and Master's phase, coursework and examinations in Linguistics and Literary Studies as well as in foreign language training must be completed. In the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree course, additional specialised didactics coursework is required. Coursework from other higher education institutions is recognised.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Romance Language degree course is internationally oriented. Compulsory stays abroad are an integral part of the degree course. In general, credits earned abroad are recognised in the context of the applicable study and examination regulations and may be assessed according to the ECTS. There are more than 49 cooperation agreements with European higher education institutions under the Erasmus programme. Double degrees have been agreed with the partner universities in Tours (France), Viterbo (Italy) and Oviedo (Spain).

Special features regarding the equipment

Materials and rooms as well as the infrastructure of the university (e.g. departmental library, university library, CIP station) are available for implementation of the degree courses. All practical rooms and lecture theatres are equipped with multimedia.

Special features regarding research activities

Research project of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for epic poetry in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, including Brazil with the title "The Epic in the Romantic Era"; Transformation and reflection of an impossible genre"; "Variation of Italian in the context of multilingualism in the Ruhr region"; "Singularisation – Sodalisation. Poetic self-authoring in the Italian and French Literature of the Early Modern Era" (Fritz Thyssen Foundation); "Differential object markers in language contact situations with involvement of Romance languages”

Other special features

In the Ruhr University Alliance (UA Ruhr), the Romance Studies seminars of the Universität Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr-Universität work closely together. Students enrolled at one of the UA Ruhr universities can take courses at the partner university and credit them to the degree course in Romance Studies. There has also been an additional qualification in "Multilingualism" in the faculty of Philology under this Alliance since 2011". Participation in the master's degree "Empirical Multilingualism".
