Special features regarding teaching

Modern teaching and learning methods such as problem-and project-based learning, where specific tasks and projects are worked on in small groups and teams; Research- and application-oriented project seminars; Interdisciplinary Master's theses with intensive, individual supervision (partly in cooperation with industry); High degree of international orientation through compulsory foreign language teaching elements (English) and internationally oriented course content M.Sc.-IWI; mobility window possible for optional study abroad at a partner university.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Many partner universities in Europe and beyond. In the 5th (Bachelor's) or 3rd (Master's) study semester, no compulsory courses are planned, giving students a chance to organise their semester abroad (“mobility window”). Study achievements abroad are recognised on the basis of individual learning agreements by the professorial ERASMUS representative in conjunction with the respective course coordinators. The International Office of Hamburg University of Technology and local contact persons in the Dean's Office are available to answer organisational and financial questions.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Newcastle, Australien; University of Waterloo, Kanada; Tokyo Tech, Japan; Tec de Monterrey, Mexiko; Nanyang Technical University, Singapur; Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, Dänemark; Politecnico di Milano, Italien; Mahidol University, Thailand; Aalto Universität, Finnland; Chalmers University of Technology, Schweden, Kaunas University of Technology, Litauen

Special features regarding the equipment

The Engineering institutes have highly modern laboratory equipment available to the students to use for their work. Examples include the “model factory” where production processes can be planned in detail; Modern simulation technology in maritime logistics; A learning lab with the latest technical equipment is available for simulation games and interactive group sessions according to the problem-based-learning concept; Technical Logistics: Research centre in cooperation with Jungheinrich AG for practical laboratory experiments, factory planning, intra-logistics and logistic networking.

Special features regarding research activities

Key areas in research include, above all, Logistics and Mobility as well as Technology and Innovation Management. Students can specialise in these early on, but also in other fields of Business Administration (e.g. Marketing, Controlling, Operations Research, etc.) and Engineering Sciences (depending on the chosen specialism e.g. Process Engineering and Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering and many more), in the form of supplementary projects, project seminars and Master's theses on current research activities.

Support for founders

All Bachelor’s students take part in an entrepreneurship/start-up project or complete a business simulation game in a team and with mentors. In addition, the topic of Start-ups can be deepened in 6 modules. All modules are based on a project-based approach, in which students implement their own ideas in teams. The content is based on the BMWi guidelines for receiving an EXIST start-up grant. There are extensive extracurricular programmes to stimulate and support those interested in starting a business, e.g. start-up advice/support, Founder Talks, summer schools, workshops.

Other special features

The TUHH offers theoretically demanding and methodologically sophisticated studies. At the same time, the close connection between study, teaching and research with the Hamburg Cluster policy (e.g. Logistics, Maritime Economy, Aviation) and the strong network of the Dean's Office of cooperation partners from business and industry promote a very international and practice-oriented study, which is oriented to the challenges of the economy with a strong theoretical foundation. Social skills (e.g. teamwork) are also promoted comprehensively.
