Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The range of programmes offered at the German Sport University Cologne includes the humanities and social sciences as well as life sciences. The subjects covered at the university, which include performance, health, education and society, are viewed from different perspectives in an interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary manner and arranged in a wide array of social fields of application. BA degree programmes must be completed in seven sections.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The German Sport University Cologne represents an academic standard founded on broad-based scientific and research excellence. The combination of research and teaching forms a stable foundation for academic, discipline-specific and topic-oriented focus for studies and teaching. The German Sport University Cologne is able to clearly distinguish itself from other universities in Germany thanks to its focus on a single discipline. Internationally recognised research is conducted in nearly all of the university's curricula .

Special features regarding the international orientation

The German Sport University Cologne (DSHS) maintains cooperation and exchange agreements with 60 universities worldwide. Approximately 150 students are sent abroad every year under these contracts. In addition to four fully English-language Master's degree programmes: MSc in Sports Management, MSc in Human Technology in Sports and Medicine, MA in International Sport Development and Politics, MSc in Psychology in Sport and Exercise, the DSHS offers an international course in English at then Bachelor's degree level. There are also English-language courses in the field of continuing education.

Special features regarding the equipment

One-of-a-kind sports facilities, the complexity and equipment of which are used for teaching, research or for free use by students, either privately or independent study purposes; Individual modules such as running tracks, walls, etc., are individually controllable to support detailed aspects; Examples: outdoor athletics stadium with an additional running track with biomechanical measuring stations, indoor athletics centre with height-adjustable running track, 50-m swimming pool with video crane rail or diving tower with underwater video observation window.

Special features regarding research activities

Research is focussed on sport and movement as an overall point of reference with the guiding themes: Performance (recording, evaluation and control of physical, mental and inter-personal performance), health (physical, psychological and social aspects of well-being and age-appropriate functional ability), society (analysis of the development and control of sport-related social structures and behaviour and the associated effects), education (research and communication of normative, personality-forming, educational aspects).

Other special features

Scholarships awarded by the university include a category specifically for students with a disability. Six students with physical disabilities are currently receiving such a scholarship. The university provides its own counselling and support services for students with mental illnesses. With the involvement of the AStA, the university is currently developing a health management system for students.
