Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The essential contents of the subject of Chemistry are taught in the form of a compact training. As a result, the graduates are qualified for professional activities that require knowledge of chemistry, for example in business, the media or government agencies. With their broad basis of chemical knowledge, the Bachelor graduates in the field of Chemistry are optimally prepared for a Master's degree programme and a doctorate.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The degree programme consists of in-depth training in the core subjects of Chemistry as well as an compulsory elective part that allows students to specialise in the (Material-Chemical) research areas available in Paderborn. The topic of sustainability is at the forefront of numerous modules, both with regard to resource-saving and environmentally friendly chemical processes and with regard to the chemical synthesis of materials for sustainable application, for example in the field of energy storage and conversion.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Study abroad at the "Chinese-German Technical Faculty" at the Technical University of Qingdao (partner university in China); numerous partner universities (e.g. ERASMUS). English-taught, international Master's degree programme in "Materials Science".

Special features regarding the equipment

Modern Chemistry laboratory building (ready for occupancy in 2011), in which both research and large-scale equipment laboratories as well as rooms for the practical training of students are located in the immediate vicinity. Relocation of a new interdisciplinary research building in spring 2019 with laboratories and machine hall for the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Physics in the key cooperation area of lightweight design with hybrid systems. A special feature of the large-scale equipment is a 700 MHz NMR spectrometer that was procured in 2018. Access to large-scale research facilities.

Special features regarding research activities

The main areas of research are materials chemistry and sustainable chemistry, e.g. hydrogen research. In addition, numerous BMBF and DFG projects are underway in the field of sustainable chemistry and photonics, as well as an ERC grant for "green water-based catalysis in synthesis processes" in theoretical chemistry. Inter-disciplinary research facilities: Institute for Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems (ILH), Centre for Sustainable Systems Design (CSSD), Centre for Optoelectronics and Phononics (CeOPP).

Other special features

A barrier-free practical workspace for students with physical impairments in the Chemistry Laboratory building established in 2019. This facility of the Department of Chemistry is quite unique in the German university landscape. The new Master's degree programme in Sustainable Chemistry starts in the winter semester of 2024/25, with a focus on the current topics of resource-saving chemical processes and environmentally friendly energy generation, conversion and storage.
