Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Bachelor's and Master's degree course with broad basic training in subjects including (Bio-) Catalysis, Environmental Chemistry, Analysis, Technical Chemistry, Modern Synthesis Methods in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Modelling and Physical Chemistry, with a wide range of specialisation options; supervision of new students in small groups; Mentoring programme; good contact with professors and lecturers; conveniently located; Numerous opportunities for employment as a student assistant at and outside the university; regular evaluation of courses by students. Number one in staff to student ratio in the current survey

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Bachelor's and Master's degree course with broad basic training in subjects including (Bio-) Catalysis, Environmental Chemistry, Analysis, Technical Chemistry, Modern Synthesis Methods in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Modelling and Physical Chemistry, with a wide range of specialisation options; supervision of new students in small groups; Mentoring programme; good contact with professors and lecturers; conveniently located; numerous opportunities for employment as a student assistant at the university and at non-university institutions; regular evaluation of courses by students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Within the framework of the compulsory elective subjects in the third study semester of the Master's degree course in Chemistry, students can complete a semester abroad as an alternative to the examination plan and curriculum. For this purpose, students first select a topic to focus on corresponding to the practical research assignment. For those interested in studying abroad, the Rostock International House and our academic advisor and Erasmus officer offer advice and support. There are also numerous collaborations with working groups abroad in which students can also participate.

Special features regarding the equipment

The institute has very good facilities thanks to new-build and conversion work, plus many new professorships and a high level of third-party funding. The institute is equipped with modern research equipment, e.g. diffractometer, NMR, IR, Raman, DSC, TGA, MS, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, computer cluster and a materials lab. Fast WiFi/Internet in all rooms. New and very well-equipped library. The Südstadt campus also has one of the best cafeterias in Germany.

Special features regarding research activities

The research is characterised by a focus on contemporary key research areas, which are tackled jointly with the Leibniz Institutes for Catalysis and Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde and the Department of Life, Light and Matter: synthesis of materials, active agents, (bio-) catalysts, the study of material characteristics (structure–activity principle), the development of methods for detection of substances (trace analysis, environmental chemistry), the use of new reaction media (with a focus on ionic liquids) and their application; development and conceptual design of new teaching concepts.

Other special features

Introduction for first-semester students, mandatory field trips to centres of the chemical industry, professors actively participate in the negotiation of jobs in industry, lectures and block courses from experts from industry, training in rhetoric and presentation techniques.
