Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The full breadth of the subject of Chemistry is represented at the university, including specialist subjects. At the BUW, emphasis is placed on particularly intensive supervision and a close relationship between teachers and students. In addition to detailed knowledge transfer, excellence in practical training is a declared goal in teaching. Through the early involvement of students in various projects in the research groups, students receive a practical introduction to university research and application-oriented developments within the framework of collaborations in the industry.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Thanks to research collaborations, the department is part of very strong international networks. The admission and exchange of guest scientists and doctoral candidates from other universities increases the international focus. The possibility of spending semesters abroad in the Bachelor's and Master's courses offers students the opportunity to spend time studying in another country without the need to extend their studies. The exchange of students is also encouraged by the range of international spring, summer and winter schools. Further programmes, such as bi-national degrees, are currently being developed.

Special features regarding the equipment

By moving into the new building in 2017, the entire Chemistry department is located in a state-of-the-art building, which boasts state-of-the-art laboratories and outstanding scientific equipment for research and training in all areas. Students also benefit from spacious seminar rooms with the latest presentation technology and short distances between buildings.

Special features regarding research activities

Ongoing research projects deal with the chemistry of the atmosphere, the synthesis of high-energy compounds, the discovery of new antibiotics, the biological effect of food ingredients, the further development of mass spectrometry and the provision of photoactive materials. The Department of Chemistry traditionally has a very high level of third-party funding.

Other special features

A Bachelor's degree programme taught in English is currently being set up in the department, which is intended to focus on questions of sustainability in chemistry. The introduction of the degree programme is planned for the 2024/2025 winter semester.
