Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

A very wide range of courses offered; all content areas in the field of geography covered by teaching staff with a focus on methodological training; wide range of excursions abroad; many special topics in lectures and seminars for higher semesters.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Close proximity to ongoing research projects; all content areas in the fields of Physical Geography, Human Geography or Geographic Remote Sensing covered by teaching staff; involvement of lecturers from the professional industry; offer of in-depth large excursions.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Master's degree programmes EAGLE and GEOSPHERES have been set up as English-language international degree programmes; many foreign students in the geography degree programmes, also at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels; some courses are related to international research projects (especially in the Master's degree programmes)

Special features regarding the equipment

Three (soon to be four) modern laboratories in Physical Geography department: e.g. general chemical analysis (XRF, AAS, wet chemistry), crystal structure determination (XRD), local resolution surface analysis (microscopes, microprobe, SEM); Workshop for drone design and maintenance in remote sensing; Several Linux computing servers and about 300 terabytes of storage space on central disk servers; modern teaching and learning laboratory in the Geography Didactics department.

Special features regarding research activities

Broad networking within the faculty and within the university; participation in joint projects with partners in Germany and abroad, often in the spokesperson/coordinator role; funding provided mainly by the DFG, BMBF and EU; considerable third-party-funding (many positions at doctoral and postdoctoral level); partly very application-oriented (example: EU-EFRE projects with colleagues from the institute in the role of spokesperson); many publications in international journals every year.

Other special features

The institute plays a leading role in the new joint project REKLINEU (Regional Pathways to Climate-Neutral Universities) and in the WueLAB (Sustainability Laboratory) of the University of Würzburg.; Close collaboration with the Office of the Women's Representative of the University of Würzburg
