Most lectures are also linked to practical coursework and field trips which serve to deepen knowledge of the course content worked through in the lectures. Students have the opportunity to complete a professional internship during the course of study.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In the field of geoinformatics, the Erasmus Mundus degree programme "Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies" is offered.; Other English-language degree programmes are also offered in the department.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Helsinki, Finnland; Université Jean Moulin, Lyon, Frankreich; University of Birmingham, Großbritanien; University Collage Cork, Irland; Università degli Studi di Milano, Italien; Vilnius University, Litauen; NTNU Trondheim, Norwegen; Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal; Lund University, Schweden; Universidad Autònoma de Barcelona, Spanien

Special features regarding the equipment

The department's Geoscience Institute has modern laboratories. In the analytical/experimental field, the institutes are very well equipped, specially in the field of isotope geochemistry. Together, they operate a range of large-scale equipment, including multiple scanning and transmission electron microscopes, which are also used for teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

A variety of research areas are offered, including geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, geochronology, structural geology, metamorphous petrology, sedimentology, hydrogeology, experimental and analytic mineralogy and petrology, planetology, meteorite research, paleozoology and paleobotany.

Other special features

Diversity: Inclusion tutors; Gender-neutral toilets in the department's buildings; Working Group for Diversity in the department to promote diversity, equal opportunities and non-discrimination (starting in November 2023); Sustainability: Geo Urbanum community garden, the compost festival is hosted, individual student projects on the topic of sustainability are funded in cooperation with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research.
