Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Covers all sub-fields of with a focus on and Geography or Human-Environmental Relations.; Profile building through a broad selection of minor subjects and non-specialist competencies (languages,; Extensive methodological training (GIS/remote sensing, lab, statistics, empirical social research).; All seminars are conducted in manageable course groups; project seminars; large range of elective options within the bachelor's degree programme; cross-module teaching; utilisation of the university's research and teaching area; research-based learning and excursions abroad.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master in Physical Geography is characterized by the variety if offers in which all areas of physical geography can be deepened as focal points. A very broad variety of methods is offered, which is of great importance both for the academic career and further professional qualification. The Master in Economic Geography is offered in this form only at a few universities in Germany and is characterised by its variety in terms of quantitative and qualitative issues.

Over 80 cooperations for the exchange of students and many individual contacts with foreign partners, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, East Asia, South America and New Zealand. Internationally established work groups; majority of current research projects linked internationally.

Special features regarding the equipment

Geography department is located in two historic buildings next door to each other. This means short distances and minimal time lost. All infrastructure facilities are also housed in these buildings: 80 computer workstations for students, labs (environmental informatics, environmental analysis, GIS, modelling, remote sensing, social research, herbarium). Modern device collection, tablets class sets, drones for microwave remote sensing, economic geographical databases, teaching rooms with current presentation technology, university's own research/teaching area, university library in sight.

Special features regarding research activities

The overarching goal of our direction is the researching of the "Human Dimension of Global Change". The unique feature of our discipline is its bridging function between the Natural Sciences and Cultural Studies. Key research areas include Mountain Ecology, Biodiversity Research, Desertification, Innovation and Knowledge Processes, Globalisation Processes, Regional Innovation Systems, Urban Development Processes, Time and Space Dynamics of Clouds, Mist and Precipitation Events and Environmental Modelling.
