Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Following the international trend, the Mainz Institute of Geosciences specialises on integrative earth system research with two focal points in "Solid Earth Dynamics" and "High-Resolution Paleoclimate Research (Paleoweather, Paleoclimate, Paleoenvironment)". The teaching modules are designed to prepare students for both the areas.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The MSc modules include a high proportion of project-oriented examinations. This allows students to focus on real research with the help of their supervisors. The project-oriented examinations aim to improve students' presentation and soft skills. These skills are needed for the future collaboration that is essential to meet the challenges of the future.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz has been a member of the European University Alliance FORTHEM since 2019. FORTHEM is one of 44 European university alliances funded under the European Commission's Erasmus+ initiative. The alliance consists of nine universities from nine different countries, which are working on in-depth transnational cooperation in the fields of education, research and innovation.

Háskóli Íslands, Reykjavík, Island; Universidad de Oviedo, Oviedo, Spanien; Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spanien; Universita degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Mailand, Italien; Università degli Studi di Catania, Catania, Italien; Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Rom, Italien; Université de Bourgogne, Dijon, Frankreich; Göteborgs universitet, Göteborg, Schweden; Universität Graz, Graz, Österreich; University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Vereinigte Königreich

Special features regarding the equipment

The Institute for Geosciences has access to MOGON II, one of the fastest supercomputers in Germany intended for academic use. The Institute of Geosciences is also equipped with state-of-the-art analytical and experimental equipment.

Special features regarding research activities

The Institute for Geosciences in Mainz has an excellent track record of acquiring EU funding for basic research (in the fields of geodynamics and paleontology). In addition, due to its participation in DFG priority programmes, the institute strives to use fundamental research methods to solve problems with high social relevance.

Other special features

The future module of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (JGU) aims to integrate climate and sustainability education into university teaching in the long term in an interdisciplinary and action-oriented manner. The central goal is to promote the climate agency, i.e. the interdisciplinary design and action skills of the students, so that they can shape a sustainable and climate-friendly future and act as multipliers in society.
