Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

A special feature is the proximity to the Geozentrum Hannover (merger of BGR, LIAG and LBEG). As a result, students benefit greatly because a considerable part of the teaching is covered by lecturers from the Geozentrum Hannover. In addition, a large part of the final theses and project work is supervised by Geozentrum lecturers, resulting in training which is highly relevant in practice. Another special feature is the opportunity for students to select a focus in Soil Science.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The lecturers at the university institutes and the Hannover Geocentre participate in a brilliant network of international research projects, which is also directly reflected in student training. Since many projects and final theses are carried out in internationally staffed work groups, students learn to communicate in English and also practice teamwork in multinational groups. Through this cooperation, there are also a lot of opportunities to carry out projects/theses abroad as a “free mover”.

Special features regarding the equipment

The institutes involved in the degree programme have laboratories with state-of-the-art analytical/experimental methods, all of which are also used in teaching as well as to work on projects and final theses. In addition, there are the excellent equipment options in the Hannover Geocentre, which is also frequently utilised in student training. Through the use of this exceptionally wide range of top-class technical equipment, students gain special expertise in handling large-scale analytical devices. In addition, students have access to various CIP pools for GIS and modelling.

Special features regarding research activities

Both the university institutes and the Hannover Geocentre are characterised by a high number of ongoing research projects in which students participate is highly welcome, be it for qualifying work or within the framework of Hiwi projects. This leads to a unique win-win situation from which students in particular benefit by learning methods, gaining insight into the professional implementation of research projects and, in addition, gaining the expertise to see themselves as part of a larger, highly multinational research team.
