Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Teaching of social and cultural science cultural geography AND environmental or geoscientific physical geography in the first semesters; Focus on individual specialisations in the further course of study (extensive elective offerings in the modules, elective modules); Attractive range of elective subjects; Comprehensive teaching of geographical working methods; Learning and working "on site" within the framework of attractive site seminars and excursions; Practical training elements

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Individual specialisation options; Project- and research-oriented studies, integration into the institute's current research projects (e.g. in the teaching research and research workshop modules); Comprehensive methodological and theoretical-conceptual training; Ability to critically reflect on social problems and to independently develop and work on a research question; Academic writing and science communication, project management; Work in small groups, attractive teacher-student ratio

Special features regarding the international orientation

Research at the Institute of Geography is internationally focused, and an internationalisation strategy is also pursued in teaching. Courses taught in English (for international guest students) have been offered regularly in all degree programmes since 2015, and the Master's degree programme in Physical Geography is now taught completely in English. In addition, the institute supports students intensively in the planning and preparation of stays abroad and maintains worldwide teaching partnerships with universities (Erasmus, Erasmus+).

Universitetet i Bergen, Norwegen; FLACSO Quito Ecuador; University of Otago, Dunedin, Neuseeland; Rhodes University, Makhanda, Südafrika; Northwest University, Potchefstroom, Südafrika; University of Tehran, Iran; Universität Bern, Schweiz; Université Paris Est Créteil, Paris, Frankreich; Universidad de Cantabria, Santander, Spanien

Special features regarding the equipment

Isotope mass spectrometer, dendroecological + soil science laboratory, ICP-OES, spectroradiometer, LAI meter, SPAD, 5 differential GNSS, helicopter-powered georadar (25 and 50 MHz), laser altimeter (aircraft/helicopter), 1 small drone with a 20 MP camera, 10 climate measurement stations (AWS), 5 automatic climate data loggers, 2 steam ice drills, 2 multi-core processing mainframe computers, approx. 30 GPS, soil science field devices, 2 CIP clusters (licenses: ArcGIS, PCI-geomatica, AgiSoft, GAMMA Remote Sensing), large-scale cartography devices, 3 geodata servers (approx. 300 TB), Erlangen Geodata Centre, GEO Map and GEO Doc databases.

Special features regarding research activities

International and interdisciplinary orientation and networking; Focuses on environmental studies – especially in the field of climate research using state-of-the-art methods of remote sensing and geoinformation – as well as on Contested Geographies, a conceptual framework in which geographies are examined as "cultural", i.e. as socially constructed, negotiated and therefore often controversial; Research on big (geospatial) data; Close integration of research and teaching (especially master's degree courses); Collaborative international research projects with student and lecturer exchange.

Other special features

Active participation in Forum 1.5 Middle Franconia. Here, science, experts and pioneers of change work together to provide the necessary impetus in the local context of Central Franconia for the necessary societal transformation towards comprehensive sustainability (SDGs), compliance with planetary boundaries and climate protection among municipalities, companies and traditional players.
