Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The foundational teaching in the two bachelor's programmes in geosciences and marine geosciences (English) is broad-based, offering a large area of specialisation with seven or eight possible specialisations, which are studied over the last three semesters, from which students choose three core courses. Features: Research-based learning, programming and modelling courses, ship excursions, closely connected with surrounding research institutes and the geological service for Bremen, IODP core storage, good conditions for research and teaching activities and participation on expeditions.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Three consecutive master's degree programmes (applied geosciences, marine geosciences, materials chemistry and mineralogy) offer applied and research-oriented teaching in a variety of specialisations, including cross-degree programmes. Features: Advanced programming and modelling courses, ship excursions, research internships, project studies, closely connected with surrounding research institutes and the geological service for Bremen, IODP Core Repository, good prerequisites for research and teaching activities and participation on expeditions.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There is no longer any study programme taught exclusively in German in the department. All 5 subjects include courses taught in English, at least in the elective area. However, students still have the opportunity to complete the Bachelor's degree programme in Earth Sciences without any knowledge of English. One Bachelor's and two Master's degree programmes are designed entirely in English. International students who cannot arrive at the place of study in time due to long visa waiting times can register as "distance students" and thus already begin taking courses online.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Bergen, Norwegen; University of Tromsö, Norwegen; University of Southampton, UK; University of Utrecht, Niederlande; University of Iceland, Island; University of Cluj, Rumänien; University of Bologna, Italien; University of Bordeaux, France; Technical University of Istanbul, Türkei; University of Waikato, Neuseeland

Special features regarding the equipment

Technical facilities: Digitized teaching and field events, current audio and video technology, IT and media equipment, computer clusters, drones with LIDAR sensors, central laboratory for sample preparation, experimental and analytical facilities, laboratory infrastructure with chemistry laboratories, cleanrooms and mass spectrometers. Access to large-scale equipment for the chemical and isotopic analysis of organic and inorganic substances, access to marine technology such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) or sea-floor drill rigs (MeBo) and research vessels. Thirty-five subject-specific databases

Special features regarding research activities

The cooperation with scientists from university and regional research institutes, such as the MARUM, Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences, and the AWI Bremerhaven, opens up the opportunity to integrate excellent and up-to-date marine research into teaching and training in the various study programmes. In addition, joint international ship expeditions and the IODP core camp make Bremen an attractive place for students and visiting academics.

Other special features

The department acts according to the diversity concept and the equality strategy of the University of Bremen. Anti-discrimination counselling centres for equal opportunities, mental health, and students with disabilities are available. The university is family-friendly, and the department offers, for example, a children's room for students and researching parents in its own building. The department finds individual, gender-appropriate and family-friendly solutions for excursions and practicals.
