Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The geosciences as well as meteorology and geophysics in Bonn are feature a wide range of geoscientific and atmospheric disciplines. They also offer a very wide range of off-road events and practical exercises, which form an essential part of the curriculum. The interdisciplinary approach, which allows for final theses as a combination of different faculties and the option to integrate semesters abroad into the course of study, lead to a wide range of possible final theses in the bachelor's and master's degrees.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Many of the practice-relevant excursions/field exercises (BSc and MSc) take place in cooperation with institutes abroad. These contacts help students make the decision about completing a semester/internship abroad and facilitate theses in international projects. In preparation, students can test and strengthen their foreign language skills in the Language Learning Centre of the University of Bonn. For international students, studying in Bonn is facilitated by many modules offered in English (M.Sc.). A double degree programme with the University of Padua is being set up (starting in 24/25 winter semester).

Special features regarding research activities

With 19 work groups, the research covers almost all main fields of Solid Earth Geosciences. The research projects are focused on the understanding of the Earth's System in the sense of the recognition and analysis of naturally occurring processes and those influenced anthropologically, but also on the early history of our Solar System. A key area in the field of research is the basic research on the origination and development of the Earth and of life, the latter in close co-operation with the life sciences, meteorology and the ABC/J network.

Other special features

GEOWINS project (inclusive study of the geosciences,; Initially funded until July 2025), which deals with the question of an inclusion service in the curriculum and analyses and initiates possible forms of implementation. Geological Mobile Digital Mapping (GeoMoDiM) project, in the course of the strategy fund diverse.sustainable.digital, which enables digital input in the field and cloud-based communication between teams on site and in indoor workspaces.
